Join us for a fun night that benefits Kiwanis Service!  We are hosting a PaintNite fundraiser on Thursday, October 13 at 7:00 PM at Dillons in the Back Bay.  Tickets are $45 per person.  You can check out the painting that we will be doing and buy tickets online through our website and Facebook Event.   A portion of your ticket price funds GBYP Kiwanis Service Projects, including the Circle K Club at Boston University, a Bicycle Safety Day in June 2017, and more!  Please note: we need to sell 35 tickets by September 29.

Looking to clean out your basement and support Kiwanis Service at the same time?  We are partnering with Savers on Rte. 1 in Saugus to collect used items.  Soft items (clothes, shoes, textiles, etc.) raise 20 cents per pound.  Hard items (kitchen items, small appliances, books, DVDs, VHS tapes, toys, knick-knacks, etc.) raise 5 center per pound.  These funds will go towards our Service Account.  Items can be donated between noon and 3PM on Saturday, September 24.  We can also arrange for our members to pick up items in advance.

Park Clean-Up and Pizza Party w/ CKI (Sign Up)

Shattuck Picnic Grove in Franklin Park

We are hosting a service project with the Greater Boston Division of CKI.  We will be working with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy to spruce up Franklin Park.  Tasks will depend on the needs of the park, but will likely include picking up trash and removing invasive species.

The project will be followed by a Kiwanis Family Pizza Party!

What to bring: Long pants, closed toe shoes, hat, all weather clothing, snack, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What is provided: All necessary tools, gloves and instruction.

What to expect: Emerald Necklace Conservancy volunteer work days are typically 3 hours long and involve some type of ecological restoration work such as planting trees or wildflowers, controlling erosion, building trails, or managing invasive species. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about safety and technique, provide you with tools and materials, and help you make a difference in our amazing parks. Expect to have fun, meet people who love the outdoors, and get dirty!

What about the weather: Projects are weather dependent.

Castle Island & Carson Beach Clean-Up and Picnic

Meet at Murphy Skating Rink, 1880 William J. Day Blvd, South Boston, MA 02127

Please join us for a beach clean-up, followed by a picnic! We will be volunteering with MassParks to clean up the Pleasure Bay area in South Boston and following the service event, we will be staying by the beach to have a picnic! Please pack your own lunch and beach towel and feel free to bring your friends/family (have them sign up too)!

Olmstead Park Clean-Up

Meet at Daisy Field Parking Lot (Corner of Jamaicaway, Willow Pond Rd, and Bynner St)

Join us in helping the Emerald Necklace Conservancy clean up Olmsted Park on Saturday June 11th from 10-1! Those of you trying to get a tan will work in the Kelley Field area removing black locust and sumac seedlings. Those of you who are shade tolerant will be removing black swallowwort along Willow Brook. We will meet at the Daisy Field parking lot at 10AM.

Volunteers should wear long pants and closed toed shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen as needed.

Somerville Kiwanis Bike Safety Day

East Boston Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo (Sign Up)

On Saturday, May 14, 2016 we will be joining the Kiwanis Club of East Boston at their annual Bike Safety Rodeo.  The target is children Kindergarten to 5th grade.  The event will include giving away free bicycle helmets, a free raffle for brand new bicycles, a bicycle safety clinic featuring bike safety inspections and optional quick tune-ups, safety lectures about the rules of the road, a presentation by the Boston Police K9 Unit, vendors with assorted give-aways, music, free pizza, drinks and much more.  The event starts at 10AM in the playground of the Salesians Boys & Girls Club. 150 Byron Street, East Boston.

Ringer Park Spring Cleanup (Sign Up)

At our May meeting, we will be conducting elections for the 2016-2017 Officers and Board of Directors, whose terms will begin on October 1. We will also be holding an in-meeting service project (more information coming shortly).

This meeting will take place at the offices of Campbell Campbell Edwards & Conroy PC. Thank you to their Director of Information Services Jon Tripp (President of the Kiwanis Club of Salem, NH) for arranging the space for us!

These officers will then appoint a Secretary and chairs for several committees, including Service, Fundraising, Membership, and Programs. We will be sorting, folding and organizing donation items at Room to Grow.  Room to Grow is dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development. Parents are referred to Room to Grow by a network of prenatal programs assisting low-income families. Upon their referral, families visit Room to Grow’s warm and inviting space once every three months from just before the birth of the baby until their child turns three.  Please contact GBYPKiwanis@gmail.com with any questions.

Kiwanis One Day at Boston Nature Center (Sign Up)

Saturday, April 2 is Kiwanis One Day, when Kiwanis Family Clubs around the globe will be out serving their communities together. We will be joined for this project by a couple local CKI clubs.

The Mass. Audubon Society’s Boston Nature Center is located just south of Franklin Park at 500 Walk Hill St. Parking is available on site, and it a short walk from the 21 or 31 bus from Forest Hills. Please see their website for more in depth driving and transit directions. Once people sign up, we may also be able to coordinate carpooling from various locations.

Our specific tasks that day will be determined by weather and site conditions but will include tasks such as trail work and restoration, pruning, invasive plant removal, clean-up of the play area, litter pick-up, or other activities. Volunteers should wear long sleeve shirts and pants and closed-toed shoes. They will provide tools and work gloves.

We will be joining Circle K members from 5 local colleges to perform various service projects at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute at Tufts Medical Center (KPTI).  KPTI is a joint program of Tufts Medical Center’s Floating Hospital for Children and the Kiwanis Foundation of New England.  Projects will include preparing materials for injury prevention programs around New England, sorting donations received at the KPTI Open House in December, and decorating a bulletin board on injury prevention.  Please contact GBYPKiwanis@gmail.com with any questions.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay for families of children being treated at hospitals in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.  We will be preparing dinner for the guests at the house.  The group of volunteers will plan the meal, designate a person to purchase groceries, prepare the meal on site at Ronald McDonald House, serve it to guests, package leftovers, and clean up afterwards.  We can take up to 6 volunteers.  Please contact GBYPKiwanis@gmail.com with any questions.

GBYP Kiwanis is holding monthly meetings this year. These will include one more formal meeting and two social meetings per quarter.
